Do you want to adopt a dog but have to work all day? Is the idea of having to leave your dog at home alone for hours whilst at work stopping you from adopting? Well stop worrying because you are not alone.

The reality is that in many family groups, both adults have to work in order to obtain a decent living. It is not right that these people should be excluded from the joy of owning a dog just because the animal will be alone a lot of the time.

The simple fact of the matter is that most dog breeds can be left alone every day for up to four or five hours without a problem, provided they have adequate food and water, and are trained in what to expect before they are left for the first time. If you want to leave your dog for longer, then this will depend largely on his temperament.

However, there are some breeds that are more independent and, therefore, better suited to being left alone for longer periods than others. These are my top 5 dog breeds that can be left alone for longer than most.

1. Basset Hound

The Basset Hound with its short legs and long body is known for its easy-going, good nature. Originally bred for the purpose of hunting rabbits and hares, this breed of dog has now firmly established itself as a favourite family pet.

2. Chihuahua

Originating from Mexico, Chihuahuas are a little, compact, graceful breed of dog, with a saucy, terrier like attitude. They are bred in a variety of different shapes and sizes.

3. Bullmastiff

As the name might suggest, the Bullmastiff is a cross between an Old English bulldog, and an English mastiff. These dogs are large, strong and powerful, but also extremely sensitive.

4. Chow Chow

The Chow Chow originates from China. It has a stout build, unusually thick coat, and a distinctive curly tail. These dogs are not particularly active, and will easily become bored if they do not get their daily exercise.

5. Norfolk terrier

These dogs were originally bred as farm dogs in order to clear the barn of vermin. At a height of only 9 to 10 inches, they are the smallest of the working terrier breeds.

Conclusion

All dogs are individuals, and all individuals are different. You know your dog, his temperament, and what he will put up with best. Just because these five breeds are better suited to being left on their own, does not guarantee that your particular dog will be fine. When leaving your dog, use your own judgement to how long be appropriate for him to be alone.
